Pillar 3a pension

Pillar 3a: how much to pay in and where to put it.

Pillar 3a is the most direct way to build an extra pension, with the option of deducting your contributions from taxable income. But a 3a account and a 3a fund are not the same thing, and the right choice depends on how much time you have ahead of you. We help you decide the amount, the instrument and the timing, starting from your situation and not from a price list.

Three decisions, one plan.

How much to pay in, where to put it, when to withdraw it: the choices that really matter.

01 · How much to pay in

There is a limit, but the maximum is not always the right answer.
What it is, how it works, who it is for
What is it?Pillar 3a is voluntary pension saving, with an annual contribution limit. In 2026 the limit is CHF 7'258 for those with a pension fund, while for self-employed people without one it goes up to 20% of net income, up to CHF 36'288.
How does it work?Together we define an amount that is sustainable over time, based on liquidity, commitments and goals. A payment that weighs too much sooner or later stops.
Who is it for?For those who work in Switzerland and want to build extra capital for retirement, and for those looking for a concrete tax relief.

02 · Account or funds

Same payment, results that can be very different.
What it is, how it works, who it is for
What is it?Pillar 3a can be a savings account, with low interest and stable capital, or an investment in funds, with higher return potential and values that fluctuate over time.
How does it work?We compare the two paths on your situation. As a general rule, if you plan to withdraw within a few years stability matters, while with more than ten years ahead funds have time to absorb the ups and downs of the market.
Who is it for?For those who already have an idle 3a account and want to know whether it is working hard enough, and for those opening their first one.

03 · When and how to withdraw

The timing of the withdrawal matters as much as that of the payment.
What it is, how it works, who it is for
What is it?3a capital can usually be withdrawn from five years before the AVS reference age. Earlier is possible only in special cases, such as buying a first home, starting a self-employed activity or leaving Switzerland permanently.
How does it work?We plan the withdrawals over different years: capital withdrawn is taxed separately from income, and spreading it over several years, with several 3a accounts, can reduce the overall tax.
Who is it for?For those approaching retirement and for those thinking about early retirement.

04 · 3a and your home

3a can also help you buy a home or pay down your mortgage.
What it is, how it works, who it is for
What is it?3a capital can be used to buy a primary residence or to reduce the mortgage, either directly or through indirect amortisation, in which the 3a capital is pledged to the bank and the debt is reduced only at maturity.
How does it work?We compare the two routes, because they have different effects on taxes, interest and pension, and we assess them together with the mortgage financing.
Who is it for?For those thinking about a home in Ticino or who already have a mortgage and want to understand how to fit 3a into the picture.
