Changing health insurer in Ticino. What to check before 30 November.
Every autumn the new premiums arrive and many people wonder whether it is worth changing. Sometimes it is, but the lowest premium is not always the best choice: deductible, insurance model and supplementary cover all matter. We help you read the numbers and decide calmly, before the deadline.
Dates, deductible, model and supplementary cover: the choices that really change the year's cost.
01 · The dates to remember
Little time, but enough if you start early.
What it is, how it works, who it is for
What is it?Basic insurance (LAMal/KVG) is compulsory for anyone living in Switzerland. Insurers announce the following year's premiums by the end of October. As a rule, notice to change insurer must reach the insurer by 30 November, to change from 1 January.
How does it work?We recommend comparing the premiums as soon as you receive them and not waiting until the last days. Notice must be sent in writing and on time, and it is wise to have the new insurer's confirmation of admission before cancelling. Always check the conditions stated in your insurer's letter.
Who is it for?For those who received a premium increase and for those who have not compared offers for a few years.
02 · Premium and deductible
The lowest premium is not always the most convenient.
What it is, how it works, who it is for
What is it?The deductible is the part of medical costs you pay yourself each year before the insurer steps in. For adults it ranges from 300 to 2'500 francs. Above the deductible you pay a 10% share, up to a maximum of 700 francs per year.
How does it work?A high deductible lowers the premium, but increases what you pay if you fall ill. Together we calculate the break-even point based on your medical expenses of recent years and the savings margin you have available.
Who is it for?For those in good health who want to save on the premium, and for those with recurring expenses who want to know whether their current deductible is the right one.
03 · The insurance model
More freedom or a lower premium: it depends on how you get treated.
What it is, how it works, who it is for
What is it?Besides the standard model, with free choice of doctor, there are alternative models such as family doctor, HMO and Telmed, which reduce the premium in exchange for some rules, for example contacting your reference doctor or a telephone line first.
How does it work?We explain in simple terms what changes in practice and whether the rules of the model fit your habits, your area and the doctors who treat you.
Who is it for?For those with a trusted doctor nearby and for those who have no problem following a more structured care path.
Changing the basic insurer does not mean changing the supplementary cover too.
What it is, how it works, who it is for
What is it?Supplementary insurance (VVG) covers benefits that basic insurance does not include, such as dental care, alternative medicine or a private room. These are contracts separate from the basic insurance and follow different rules: insurers may assess your health and refuse or limit the cover.
How does it work? Before changing we check with you the supplementary cover you have, for example the notice periods, often different from those of basic insurance, and the risk of losing cover that you can no longer get back on the same terms.
Who is it for?For those who have had supplementary cover for years and want to change only their basic insurance without losing important cover.
